If you’ve been told your back pain is “normal” in pregnancy because of “loose joints,” this post is for you! Yes, pregnancy releases the hormone relaxin to help joints adjust for delivery. For a long time, it was thought this caused pelvic girdle pain (back, SI joint, and pubic bone pain), but new research shows no link between relaxin and pain.

Are you diligently doing your Kegel exercises but not seeing results? Or maybe you’re noticing even more leakage?

Urine leakage often stems from poor pressure management. Many times, this happens when there’s too much tension or muscle activation in the back part of your pelvic floor compared to the front. If your kegels aren’t helping, it might be because:

1) Factors outside your pelvic floor are affecting how it works!

This could be things like:
-your ability to stack your ribcage over your pelvis
-your mobility in the ribcage/pelvis
-your breath mechanics
-your foot and hip strength or mobility
-and more!

2) You are already holding too much muscle tension in your pelvic floor muscles.

In that case you need to FIRST teach your body to let go of that tension, THEN, train those muscles to be strong again.

Either way, doing endless Kegels won’t fix the issue in isolation. So if you feel like you’ve been working hard with no results and you’re feeling frustrated, don’t worry! There’s still hope for improvement.

People experiencing pelvic pain are often advised to stop lifting, as it’s thought to trigger their symptoms. Not only is this advice unhelpful, but in many cases, a personalized lifting program can actually help reduce pelvic pain.

Common pelvic pain symptoms that might lead to this advice include:

✌️Constipation
🚶Back or hip pain
🥝Pain in the vulva or deep in the pelvis
🍆Pain in the penis, testicles, or deep in the pelvis
🍑Pain around the anus or tailbone
➕Any other pain in and around the pelvic area

The truth is, even if you stop lifting in the gym, everyday movements like squatting to sit down, hinging to pick something up, or carrying heavy groceries still require your body to move in ways that can affect your symptoms. That’s why it’s important to prepare your body by retraining these movement patterns in the gym. Plus, lifting not only helps physically but can also empower you and boost your mental health.
